Dissection
by Terry Allen
Take my brain and toss it,
into a jar of aldehydes.
Screw tight the lid and let it sit,
examine it from all sides.
Place it in a museum,
for all to gawk and stare.
I’ll not demand my freedom,
’cause I’m not really there.
Take my skin, peel it away,
Show the world all my bones.
Let them hang and sway,
From me, you’ll hear no groans.
I’m blind, deaf, and dumb,
I’ll sit quietly in my chair.
I’ll not demand my freedom,
’cause I’m not really there.
Take my heart,
and sever all the arteries.
Light it up and make it art,
do with it as you please.
Let it stay till kingdom come,
I’ve not a single care.
I’ll not demand my freedom,
’cause I’m not really there.
